Animal Crossing: Villager Categories

Ever since I decorated Claude’s house for Theme of the Week, I decided to do an analysis on which villagers and other animals appeared in what games. I even categorized them into eight categories, which are based on which games each villager appeared in. We know that villagers are classified by species (i.e. Bob the cat, Goldie the dog etc). Most of the time, they are classified by personality. We know the six common ones are the motivated and active jock villagers, the laid back and mature lazy villagers, the rude and easily-angered cranky villagers, the hyper and cheerful peppy villagers, the nice and responsible normal villagers, and the spoiled and mean snooty villagers. The two new ones as added in ACNL are the gentle and polite smug villagers and the defensive and caring uchi villagers. On certain fansites (such as Bell Tree Forums), there is another way of categorizing villagers. This is known as the tier system, where each animal is ranked based on popularity. The top tier includes all of the extremely popular villagers such as Marshal, Diana, and Rosie, as the bottom tier includes the majority of the villagers that are not very popular, such as Barold, Beardo, and Jambette. The more popular the villager is, the higher the tier, which means higher recommended auction prices. The bottom tier suggests that you should not sell them or auction them, but give them away for free. The categories I will show you today are based on appearances.

Here is a list of villagers. The question is, what do all of these have in common?

  • Ace
  • Apple
  • Croque
  • Cashmere
  • Hornsby
  • Merengue
  • Hamlet
  • Huggy
  • Oxford
  • Diana
  • Zucker
  • Zoe

The answer: All of them have appeared in only one Main Series game. It’s just that half of these twelve won’t meet the other half.

If you only played the GameCube Version of Animal Crossing and/or stopped playing Animal Crossing before Wild World came out, but you know all of the villagers in ACGC, you would have no clue who Hamlet, Fauna, Rodney, Dierdre, Sly, Gayle, Shep, or Cherry are. You also wouldn’t know Isabelle, Digby, Reese, or Leif. You’ll probably won’t know about the Wild World or City Folk introduced villagers. In fact, you won’t even know the events that happened between Wild World to New Leaf. There are many facts that have been added over time, which include (but not limited to):

  • Mabel and Sable both had a third sister.
  • Tom Nook no longer runs the main store.
  • Redd sold counterfeit paintings.
  • Tortimer retired as a mayor.
  • Blathers had a little sister and a pigeon as a friend (Celeste and Brewster, respectively).
  • Grass wears down after villagers trampling on them.
  • Copper and Booker were once guards of the town gates.
  • Gracie runs a store called GracieGrace.
  • Kapp’n had a family that lives in an island hut.
  • Human characters increased in height, making them fully customizable.

At the same time, you also didn’t know that Hazel was renamed to “Sally”, as Sally was renamed to “Cally”. A uni-brow squirrel added in ACNL took the name of “Hazel”. You also wouldn’t know that Ed became a smug villager, and T-Bone became a cranky villager.

If New Leaf was your first game, and if you never played any version prior to ACNL, you wouldn’t know who Chuck, Petunia, Leopold, Marcy, Weber, or Nosegay are. In case if you’re wondering, those six villagers, as well as many other villagers, were in the first Animal Crossing game released in the US, whether or not you had access to the island. Since Wild World was released, a whole chunk of these villagers (such as Leopold, Boots, Cobb, and Axel) were removed while they added villagers that weren’t in the GameCube version (such as Agent S, Melba, Tiffany, Kid Cat, Big Top, and Angus), as well as introducing new green-tag animals such as Lyle, Pascal, and Shrunk. This is true. Not all characters in New Leaf were in previous versions, and not all of the villagers in the GameCube version were available in all versions. If you only played New Leaf, you also wouldn’t know any of these facts:

  • Tom Nook used to sell everything any store in future games provided.
  • The Able Sisters used to be only about pattern designs.
  • Resetti only believed that you wanted to reset if you didn’t save your game, as he gets angrier over time.
  • Harriet used to be part of Nookington’s.
  • Fossils at one time could only be identified by mail.

You also wouldn’t know that Cally was once Sally, Sally was once Hazel, T-Bone was a lazy villager, Ed was a jock villager, and that there were originally six personalities.

Throughout this whole analysis I did by browsing wikis, guides, and several other info, it is clear that there are 470 animals in the entire AC series (including Filly, Felyne, and Lottie, who weren’t in the main series). When browsing these guides and naming all of the characters, I did not include the following:

  • Villagers that only appeared in the Japanese versions (excluding future HHD DLC).
  • Villagers that only appeared on the island. If they were in the island in the GameCube version, but normal villagers in future games, I counted them as the new villagers outside the GameCube version.

In addition, Champ and Porter are one in the same. Ever since Porter was dropped in Wild World, they added a new villager, Champ. When they returned the train station in ACNL, Champ was no longer a villager, as they re-added Porter.

According to this entire analysis, there are eight categories of villagers and other animals. Some animals were in only one of the Main Series games, some were in two, some were in three, and the others were in all of them. As for Happy Home Designer characters, the rule of thumb is that all characters that appeared in New Leaf are also in Happy Home Designer, which included the villagers that were added in Wild World and in City Folk. There are 251 characters in the GameCube Version, 181 in Wild World, 256 in City Folk, 390 in New Leaf, and 417 in Happy Home Designer.

Category 1

The first category of animals include all of the characters that were in all four games, plus Happy Home Designer. As some villagers in the GameCube version were removed when Wild World came out, these 131 characters did not get removed at all. They stayed in the series the whole time and are the most iconic characters of the series. This is the largest category of animals, which includes 25 special characters, and 106 regular villagers

Category 2

The next three categories contain the 211 characters that were added in the future games. If you were a veteran to the GameCube version of Animal Crossing, you would know very well that these characters aren’t real Animal Crossing characters (unless if you had access to the GBA Island, which had a few of these characters). But that’s because you haven’t experienced the others.

The first of these three categories include 49 new characters. As Nintendo made a sequel to the GameCube version, they removed 120 from the 251 characters that were already in the series (one of them being Wisp, who was absent in both handheld AC games). But for the 120 characters that were gone from the AC family, 50 characters (including Kaitlin) were added. Because of the massive removal of characters, Wild World had the fewest amount of characters of the four, but these 49 characters were in every Animal Crossing since Wild World. Therefore, they have been part of the mainstream AC characters, along with the 131 characters in all four games.

Category 3

This is the smallest category of new characters introduced to Animal Crossing (unless if you want to count the new ones in Happy Home Designer that were never in New Leaf). The same 181 characters that were in Wild World were also in City Folk. While 32 of the 120 characters that were removed returned in City Folk (including Wisp), 43 new characters (2 of them being Frillard and Serena) were added. Unfortunately, Wisp, Frillard, Serena, and even Kaitlin aren’t in ACNL. So this category contains 41 characters, which were in both City Folk and New Leaf, but were not in versions prior to City Folk.

Category 4

The second largest category of animals is the largest category of the new animals added to each game. As 252 characters from City Folk and 17 other characters make it to New Leaf, the first AC game on the 3DS added 121 new characters. All of these characters only appear in New Leaf, as well as the spin-off game of Happy Home Designer. If you were used to the GameCube version or Wild World, all of them would be very unfamiliar. Every character included in this category are the Smug and Uchi villagers (save Ed), as well as the deer and hamster villagers. 63 of these 121 characters are part of the new species and personalities. They also introduced the first wolves that are neither Cranky or Snooty, male kangaroos, a Jock squirrel, a Peppy penguin, the snowman family, Kappn’s family, and the new main animal of the series (Isabelle). Alpacas, sloths, and tapirs are the other new animals in the game. The full list can be read here.

Category 5

The last four categories of animals include all of the characters that were in the GameCube version that got removed since Wild World. While Wisp is one of the characters, 119 other characters were present in the GameCube Version, but absent in Wild World. While more characters were being introduced in future versions, some of these characters have been coming back. However, not all of them have returned or are returning in future games. So I put these characters into four categories. The later I list them, the later their comebacks are. Some villagers, such as Leopold, Cashmere, and Olive have never returned after Wild World. Villagers like Claude, Piper, and Buzz haven’t returned in any Main Series game after the GameCube Version, but are present in Happy Home Designer. The others have returned in at least City Folk or New Leaf.

This category contains the 31 characters that returned to the series through City Folk and stayed there for the rest of the series. Basically, the only game they are absent in is Wild World. The Category 2 characters were also absent in only one game (the GameCube Version). But this is a full list of those who were in both the GameCube Version and City Folk, as well as in New Leaf and Happy Home Designer.

  • Axel
  • Chip
  • Cookie
  • Cousteau
  • Don (Resetti’s brother)

  • Stinky
  • Sydney

Category 6

Before New Leaf, the GameCube Version was the only game with these characters (including Porter as a special character). Now with ACNL released (which was 2.5 years ago), 17 more characters have made their comebacks. Of course we will never forget them. After 31 characters from the GameCube Version returned in City Folk, 17 of them followed those 31. Category 6 contains all of them, and it’s the smallest category on this entry.

  • Anicotti
  • Ava
  • Bangle
  • Bertha
  • Biff
  • Bubbles
  • Cally (Sally in ACGC)
  • Cheri
  • Cobb
  • Doc
  • Gruff
  • Gwen
  • Ozzie
  • Porter
  • Ricky
  • T-Bone
  • Velma

Category 7

Category 7 villagers were villagers that were removed before Wild World, and have not come back in the Main Series. However, they have finally returned, but only in Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer. 17 of these 18 villagers are already DLC or incoming DLC. You’re probably glad that they have come back, but they are a bit different than what you remember of them. Therefore, all of them seem lucky, but they still have yet to come back in the Main Series.

  • Billy
  • Boots
  • Buzz

  • Huck
  • Louie
  • Maddie

  • Stella
  • Tybalt

Category 8

The last category of villagers include the 53 villagers that were removed between the GameCube Version and Wild World, and have never came back ever (or at least until the next game). We probably miss them a lot as they never got to see us again, or we’re glad that some of them have disappeared without coming back (depending on how sympathetic you are). A lot of us think that the villagers that never came back were mostly islanders. But the list of actual villagers that never came back is here.

  • Ace
  • Admiral
  • Aziz
  • Bea
  • Belle
  • Bessie
  • Betty
  • Bitty
  • Boris
  • Candi

Who I want to see return

That’s all of the categories listed, but not all 470 characters are named. The only ones that I haven’t listed in any of these categories are Felyne, Filly, Frillard, Kaitlin, Lottie, Serena, and Wisp. Al of them do not fit any pattern whatsoever, but that’s because none of these are in ACNL. Lottie, Filly, and Felyne are all exclusive to Happy Home Designer, and Frillard, Kaitlin, Serena, and Wisp were removed in transition between City Folk and New Leaf.

Now if you want to know which characters from the previous versions I want to see appear in the next game, they include all of the characters that appeared in New Leaf, as well as the Category 7 villagers. But I also want to see 24 of the Category 8 villagers return in the next game. Here they are, and here are the personalities that best fit them if they come back.

  • Ace (Jock)
  • Admiral (Cranky)
  • Boris (Smug)
  • Candi (Peppy)
  • Cashmere (Snooty)
  • Hambo (Smug)
  • Hornsby (Lazy)
  • Leopold (Jock)
  • Liz (Uchi)
  • Marcy (Peppy)
  • Nosegay (Normal)
  • Olive (Normal)
  • Otis (Smug)
  • Oxford (Cranky)
  • Penny (Uchi)
  • Quetzal (Jock)
  • Rhoda (Snooty)
  • Rio (Peppy)
  • Sandy (Normal)
  • Sue E. (Uchi)
  • Sven (Lazy)
  • Twirp (Cranky)
  • Valise (Snooty)
  • Weber (Lazy)

You can see who I miss most from Category 8. The other villagers from Category 8, I don’t even care about them. I don’t even miss them at all. Peanut, Mitzi, Goldie, Bluebear, Amelia, Purrl, Blaire, and Aurora are all of the villagers from the GameCube Version that I’m glad to see continue on in Wild World when many villagers were removed.

Lastly, here is a rundown of all of the categories in each game:

  • Animal Crossing – 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
  • GameCube Version – 1, 5, 6, 7, 8
  • Wild World – 1, 2
  • City Folk – 1, 2, 3, 5
  • New Leaf – 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
  • Happy Home Designer – 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

And that’s it. In your comments, tell me which villagers you actually miss the most, and villagers that you were glad that never got removed over time.
