Ghosts

Chapter 30
You’ll lose your Bells if a ghost catches you.

In Chapter 3, I went over a list of problems that need to be fixed. I know there should be challenges, but I suggested solutions for a reason. Nintendo didn’t realize how bad those problems really were, but if we address some of these problems, Animal Crossing would be less challenging. Even if we have sensitive beetles and sea basses, there’s nothing else that can prevent you from progressing so fast (unless if you oppose time traveling). So I came up with a new challenge that may keep time travelers playing longer.

Another problem with the game is that despite having bees, tarantulas, scorpions, and scary outdoor music, I felt that the game isn’t scary enough at night. So the challenge I came up for Animal Crossing’s next game is both annoying and scary. Almost every night, ghosts can appear in your town. Their shape looks like the boos in Super Mario, but the face isn’t the same. Their sounds are a low pitched boo, a growl, a grunt, and a high pitched boo (rarely). When you see one, it will begin chasing you. If this happens, you must run, or try capturing it with your net. If all else fails, the ghost can take all of your money, as well as any items you have on you.

Ghost Risk

The first thing to talk about related to ghosts is when and where will they appear. Some areas are basically ghost safe, but others have a high ghost risk.

Time of the Day:

The first thing you’ll need to know is what time of the day do ghosts appear. Prior to 10:00 PM at night, ghosts will never appear whatsoever. Even if it’s at 9:00 PM, 8:00 PM, or 7:00 PM when the sun is still up. But once it’s 10:00 PM, that’s when they will begin to appear.

  • 10:00 to 10:59 PM – ghosts start to appear in your town. It’s already late enough for from to go out and haunt the town. But it’s still pretty early, so they won’t be as common.
  • 11:00 to 11:59 PM – the frequency and/or risk is higher during this hour as the town is progressing through the depths of the night.
  • 12:00 to 12:59 AM – the ghost risk gets even higher at this time of the day. Depending on other factors, it’s also when they’re going to get uglier.
  • 1:00 to 1:59 AM – this hour is when the ghost risk is at the peak. Ghosts are more likely to come at this hour than any time of the day. It’s also when the worst of the ghosts may appear.
  • 2:00 to 2:59 AM – after the scariest hour is over, ghosts begin to take off. The risk is as high during this time of the day as it is during 12 AM, but it’s beginning to alleviate.
  • 3:00 to 3:59 AM – the more severe ghosts are gone, but there are still ghosts floating around in your town. It’s just like 11 PM.
  • 4:00 to 4:59 AM – as it’s getting late for them to appear, the risk is as low as the first hour is. In some months, they don’t even appear at this time of the day.

At 5:00 AM, ghosts will no longer appear, regardless of factors. Throughout the rest of the day, you are safe, until 10:00 PM.

Time of the Year:

Ghosts do not care about temperature, but they’re mostly fixated on money. But it’s true that ghosts do appear more frequently at one season than other seasons.

  • July – the month of July is the best month for money making. Rare fish appear in the ocean and rivers, rare insects are on trees, and Reese has premium prices for these fish and insects. At the same time, this month is also the worst month for ghosts. This is when the ghost risk is at the highest. The worst of the ghosts are most likely going to appear too.
  • June and August – you can have a lot of fun in the summer, but the night is not that good. It’s not the tarantulas or scorpions you should fear. It’s the ghosts you shouldn’t stay near. The worst part, you may not know when they will appear. The problem isn’t as bad as July’s, but they are more common in these months than the rest of the year.
  • May and September – the ghost risk is a bit lower than the summer months, but outside the summer, these two months are when they’re at the worst.
  • April and October – April may be the month of pranks as October is the month of Halloween, but more surprisingly, the ghost risk isn’t as high during these two months. It’s also not as low as the other five months in between. It’s more of the middle ground.
  • March and November – as the risk continues to get even lower as you’re approaching the winter, the timespan is getting shorter. Even during the peak hour, they’re not to common.
  • February and December – out of all of the months that ghosts appear in, these two months are when the risk is at the lowest. Very rarely, they will appear outside the peak hour, but they’ll still appear during the peak hour. Even during the peak hour, their occurrence is less often than not.
  • January – people consider January to be the worst month because of how cold it is or how there’s not many events, but in terms of ghost risk, this is the safest month. Ghosts will never appear at all in January, even if you’re wandering in town during the peak hour with a full wallet and a pocket full of Gracie items. If you’re interested into ghost hunting, this is not a good month for you. But at least everything is safe from ghosts.

Weather:

Ghosts like to come any time they wish. However, when it rains, they will never appear. They’re scared of snow even more. So in order for them to appear, precipitation should not happen.

Holidays:

Another reason why ghosts do not appear during the nights they’re supposed to be there is because of a holiday or event that’s happening. Even if it’s a fishing tourney, bug off, or a custom holiday during the ghostly hours, they wouldn’t appear. Remember that a day with a holiday or event starts at 6:00 AM on one day and ends at 5:59 AM on the next, even when the holiday stops at 12:00 AM. Until the refresh hour occurs, ghosts will not appear.

Biome:

Ghosts do not care what biome you live in. They can occur anywhere. But the forest biome is the best example of measuring the risk since it has seasons.

Location:

Ghosts only appear outside and in town. If you’re in your house, a villager house, or in another building, you won’t see ghosts. They also don’t appear in Main Street, the HH Showcase, or on the island.

It’s also worth noting that ghosts do not appear in town if your gates are open. This is a perfect trick to keep ghosts out, but there’s another way.

Time Traveling:

Remember in Wild World when desynchronizing the clock caused a few glitches. Desynchronizing the clock from you system will allow ghosts to occur even more. They like to steal from time travelers more than people who play naturally.

Character Factors:

The other factors that lure in ghosts depend on what your character is holding, what your character is wearing, or how much Bells you have.

Ghosts can chase after your character any time, but some outfits may draw their attention even more. Outfits composed of Gracie items, Island items, or holiday items may put you in greater risk while outfits composed of the patched clothes would lower the risk. If you’re wearing a pumpkin head or one of the six Halloween masks (especially the Ghost Mask), the ghosts would think of you as a monster and would rather ignore you than harass you.

Rare items can increase ghost risk too. When you’re carrying certain items, the ghosts may come after you. The items of highest risk are GracieGrace items, Re-Tail exclusives, holiday items, and Island items. Some may go after fish, insects, or seafood.

The biggest character factor is wealth. If you have a full wallet (999,999 Bells) or even 10% of a full wallet (100,000 Bells), you can put yourself into even more danger.

What ghosts do

The reason why you should care about ghosts is because they are very greedy, as they can steal money and items from you.

In order to sight a ghost, you have to follow a few signs. If you hear a ghostly growl, that is the first step towards appearance. After three growls, you can see that a ghost appearing is imminent. After hearing a boo, the ghost will be visible, and will start chasing after your character. It moves slowly at first, but it always accelerates until it’s fast enough to outrun you, catching you.

When a ghost appears, you have to run. Either find a good location to hide or get inside Main Street. But once a ghost hits you, your character cannot move. It will surround you, float around you quickly, as your character gets knocked out. And then, the screen blacks out just like it does when a tarantula or scorpion attacks you.

When you wake up, you will appear in front of your house, but you can notice the mishaps that are left behind, and they are pretty severe.

Mishaps:

  • Bells – this will always happen after being attacked by a ghost, even during the winter. Once you wake up from an attack, you will find out that you are all out of Bells. That’s right, if you get attacked once, you will lose every Bell in your wallet. You can see why they’re targeting the rich.
  • Items – 90% of the time, ghosts can steal rare items in your pocket. Those include GracieGrace items, Island items, seasonal items, special visitor items, and holiday items. 50% of the time, instead of stealing specific items, they can steal all of your items you’re carrying with you.
  • Fish/Insects – about 75% of the time, ghosts can steal the fish or insects you’re carrying with you in your pocket. If you get attacked by these ghosts, all fish worth 6,000 Bells or more and all insects and seafood worth 3,000 Bells or more would get stolen. 40% of the time, they would go for all fish, insects, and seafood, not just the expensive ones.
  • Hair – Only the really bad ghosts would do this. They’re also the only ones that steal wigs, hats, and facewear. About 25% of the time during that specific time frame, they can steal wigs if you’re wearing one. Whether or not you have a wig, they can also mess up your hair, resulting in bedhair.
  • Patterns – another of the really bad ghosts. About 10% of the time, some of the patterns in your pattern inventory may be deleted because of these creeps. You better have saved them in your pattern saving box at the Ables or you will be forced to design it all over again. Or if you don’t mind, you can take a visit with Resetti and have him scold you for resetting.

Items that can be stolen based on ghost risk:

  • Bells
    • Very Rare – 1 in 20 times, they’ll appear if you have over 100,000 Bells in wallet. 1 in 10 times, they’ll appear if you have over 500,000 Bells. They don’t appear if you have less than 100,000 Bells.
    • Rare – 1 in 10 times, they’ll appear if you have over 100,000 Bells in wallet. In in 5 times, they’ll appear if you have over 500,000 Bells. They don’t appear if you have less than 100,000 Bells.
    • Low Risk – 1 in 10 times, they’ll appear if you have over 50,000 Bells in wallet. 1 in 5 times, they’ll appear if you have over 100,000 Bells. 1 in 2 times, they’ll appear if you have over 500,000 Bells. They don’t appear if you have less than 10,000 Bells.
    • Medium Risk – ghosts will always appear if you have over 500,000 Bells in wallet, but they rarely appear if you have less than 10,000 Bells in wallet. It happens 1 in 25 times if your wallet is empty.
    • High Risk – ghosts will always appear if you have over 100,000 Bells in wallet. 1 in 10 times, they’ll appear if you have less than 10,000 Bells.
    • Very High Risk – ghosts will always appear if you have over 50,000 Bells in wallet. 1 in 5 times, they’ll appear if you have less than 10,000 Bells.
    • Dangerous – ghosts will always appear if you have over 10,000 Bells. If you have less, they’ll be more likely to appear if you have any other items of interest.
  • Items
    • Very Rare – ghosts won’t steal items from you. They’re more interested into Bells.
    • Rare – 1 in 20 times, ghosts will steal all of the special items. But they’ll never steal the other items.
    • Low Risk – 1 in 10 times, ghosts will steal all of the special items. But they’ll still leave the other items alone.
    • Medium Risk – 1 in 2 times, ghosts will steal all of the special items. 1 in 20 times, they’ll steal all items (except for the items they never steal).
    • High Risk – ghosts will always steal every special item, but they’ll go for all possible items 1 in 10 times.
    • Very High Risk – ghosts will always steal every special item, but they’ll go for all possible items 1 in 10 times.
    • Dangerous – ghosts will always steal every item, not just the special items. But the items they never steal will stay in your pockets.
  • Fish/Insects
    • Very Rare – ghosts won’t steal fish, insects, or seafood from you.
    • Rare – ghosts won’t steal fish, insects, or seafood from you.
    • Low Risk – 1 in 20 times, you will lose all of your pricey fish, insects, and seafood.
    • Medium Risk – 1 in 10 times, you will lose all of your pricey fish, insects, and seafood.
    • High Risk – 1 in 2 times, you will lose all of your pricey fish, insects, and seafood. 1 in 20 times, you will lose all of the other fish, insects, and seafood.
    • Very High Risk – ghosts will always steal all of the more expensive fish, insects, and seafood, but they’ll go for the rest 1 in 10 times.
    • Dangerous – ghosts will always steal all of the more expensive fish, insects, and seafood, but they’ll go for the rest 1 in 2 times.
  • Hair
    • Very Rare – ghosts won’t steal any headgear or facewear you have on or mess with your hair.
    • Rare – ghosts won’t steal any headgear or facewear you have on or mess with your hair.
    • Low Risk – ghosts won’t steal any headgear or facewear you have on or mess with your hair.
    • Medium Risk – ghosts will only steal what you’re wearing on your head or face you have on. They’ll take all, but this happens 1 in 20 times. Wigs are always exempt.
    • High Risk – ghosts will steal what you’re wearing on your head or face 1 out of every 10 ghost attacks. Wigs are always exempt.
    • Very High Risk – ghosts will steal what you’re wearing on your head or face once every 5 times. 1 in 20 times, they’ll steal the wigs too, and whether or not you have one on, you will end up with bedhair.
    • Dangerous – ghosts will steal what you’re wearing on your head or face once every 2 times. 1 in 10 times, they’ll steal the wigs too, and whether or not you have one on, you will end up with bedhair.
  • Patterns
    • Ghosts don’t typically take patterns you designed at the Able Sisters or whatever store they have, but if the risk is “very high”, it will happen 1 in 50 times. 1 in 20 times, it will happen if the risk is “dangerous”.

Items they never steal:

While ghosts can be such jerks, some items will actually never get stolen.

  • HHA prizes (you can wear the HHA jacket and never have it get stolen)
  • Post office prizes
  • Mannequins
  • Unorderable DLC
  • Associated prizes with the achievement system (including models, golden tools, ABD, and HCM)
  • Platinum Statue
  • Secret furniture series (especially Invisible Series)
  • Doors, windows, and curtains
  • Worthless items (including patched clothes, trash etc)

Items earned from theft:

In Chapter 21, I went over the secret furniture series, and some items that they can steal actually do get replaced with items from the Invisible Series. Here are the items you want them to steal if you want a cool furniture series:

  • Robo Bed – Invisible Bed
  • Green Bench – Invisible Bench
  • Blue Bureau – Invisible Bureau
  • Classic Chair – Invisible Chair
  • Kitschy Clock – Invisible Clock
  • Sleek Closet – Invisible Closet
  • Modern End Table – Invisible End Table
  • Yellow Lamp – Invisible Lamp
  • Gold Stereo – Invisible Stereo
  • Red Table – Invisible Table
  • Ranch Shelf – Invisible Wall Shelf
  • Enamel Lamp – Invisible Light

Ghost Stopping:

On any regular day with no rain, ghosts can appear all over the night. But you can stop them from ever appearing in the night. To do this, they must appear and start chasing after you. When they are close, you must pull out a silver or golden net (regular nets don’t work). Once they spot you with a net, they will flee from you, being the frightened one instead of frightening you. Like I said about acceleration, it will always accelerate, so you must be quick as it floats away. You better capture it before it disappears. Once it’s caught, it will be put into a jar.

If five ghosts are put into a jar, then the remaining ghosts in town will leave and never come back for the night. You have dominated the night.

King Ghost:

Once in a while, when the Nooklings are closed at night, you can see that their store is still open (if you haven’t set their hours open in the middle of the night). When you go inside, you can see that everything it out of stock and nobody is inside. The catalog machine is out of service too. In the furniture section, you will see a ghost appear. That is the king of all of the ghosts.

The ghost king has one main goal – to keep all ghosts in his kingdom from entering your town. He doesn’t want anyone being robbed or haunted. He will give you items from the Old Series, but in order to do this, you must dominate the night of when he’s in the store. That means, capturing five ghosts.

Traditional Mode:

Even in Traditional Mode, these creeps can spook your town on most of the tiers. But when you’re at Tier Three of Traditional Mode, they will never appear in your town at any time of the year.
